Listen Up

Sound is an integral part of Stephen Winters’ artistic practice. For more than twelve years, he has composed and performed music while exploring the fundamental relationships between sound, vibration, nature, and perception.

Working with field recordings, voice, acoustic and electronic instruments, synthesis, and repetition, Stephen creates immersive ambient compositions that emerge from the same questions that guide his visual work: our relationship to the natural world, the intelligence of pattern, and the experience of remembering ourselves as part of something larger.

Rather than existing separately from his drawings and paintings, the music functions as another way of entering the same landscape—one experienced through listening rather than seeing. The result is a sound world that can feel strangely familiar, like returning to a home you forgot you had.

Stephen’s limited-edition vinyl record, created in conjunction with The Animal I Forgot I Was, is available through Gallery RAM at galleryram.com.
